Thousands in Schuylkill County are still in the dark

Newswatch 16's Mackenzie Aucker shows us how people in those communities are handling the outages.

SCHUYLKILL COUNTY, Pa. — The storm has been over for a day, but thousands of homes and businesses in Schuylkill County still don't have power. Officials say it might not be restored until Thursday in some spots.

Workers at the Front Door Florist in Port Carbon are using flashlights and lanterns while putting bouquets together for Valentine's Day. They haven't had power since Tuesday's storm.

"We've been trying to do the orders, get the orders out. We're maintaining it. Our customers are being very gracious and understanding, but it is frustrating," said owner Kim Kuperavage.

Kuperavage and her employees have been at the flower shop since 4 a.m.

"I'm trying to remain calm, and I'm just doing our work. That's the best thing, and with the help of my friends and our staff, we're getting everything done," Kuperavage said.

Tom Pavlack spent most of Tuesday in the dark, but the power came back in the evening.

"We're lucky; we have heat, whatever else we need, cooking, no TV, but that's a minor inconvenience."

Some aren't as lucky, like Ava Duffy and her family.

"We went to my Nan's house because they have a generator, so it a little bit of heat, and they have a fireplace too."

Other residents were forced to find shelter elsewhere.

"We found a hotel up outside Mahony City, the Comfort Inn and Suites, and got a room there for the night with the dog," Mark Miller said.

It's not just Port Carbon. Richard Sokol lives in Blythe Township. He tells us they're usually the last ones to get their power restored when these outages happen.

"We don't have nothing, really, so we would love it for somebody to come and hook our electric up as soon as possible."

PPL officials say they hope to have power restored on Thursday.
