Polar Pop benefits Special Olympics in Schuylkill County

The Schuylkill County Special Olympics began a chilly start to the weekend with its 4th Annual Polar Pop fundraising event.

SCHUYLKILL COUNTY, Pa. — Couches, athletes, and even a state representative got their heads wet Saturday, all for a great cause.

Anyone was welcome to join the Schuylkill County Special Olympics Polar Pop and purchase a balloon for $5 to pop it over someone's head, whether that be an athlete or a friend.

Joseph Corby,  Schuylkill County Special Olympics Community Leader, says most participants get thirty to forty balloons popped over their heads. The entire event is run by volunteers.

"Like they always say, 'We don't get paid anything because we're volunteers, but we get paid in smiles," said Corby.

Smiles could be seen even on those seconds away from getting a balloon popped over their head.

Participants were able to dry up and get warm inside with food, hot chocolate, and even a live band that performs for free each year at the Polar Pop.

One of the athletes, Kailey Jefferson, hit a huge record last year for the most money raised by one single athlete at the Polar Pop event.

One hundred percent of the proceeds raised at the Polar Pop go towards the Schuylkill County Special Olympics to support the athletes.

Schuylkill County State Representative Tim Twardzik came out to show his support, and he came prepared with something bubbly, "Absolutely! I brought my shampoo. I am ready!"

Chris Ebling, Schuylkill County Special Olympics Program Manager, had a line of athletes waiting to pop a balloon over his head.

Pamala Nicholas is one of the athletes who came to support and enjoy the show for the first time this year, "I'm definitely coming back next year, and I can't wait to get all the balloons popped on me!"
