WAYNE TOWNSHIP -- The month of August brings with it a number of county fairs that are often something of a late summer highlight for many people.
The Schuylkill County Fair kicked off Monday.
As the fair organizers spent the day putting the finishing touches on exhibits and vendors cooking their food just right, Paul Kennedy, president of the Schuylkill County Fair described this year's fair as Christmas in the summertime. He's excited for fairgoers to see all this fair had to offer.
"When the guest comes here, they see this beautiful facility with action-packed entertainment, not just entertaining and good for the stomach, to leave here and learn something," said Kennedy.
This is the 33rd year of the Schuylkill County Fair and already, Kennedy says, they've seen a record number of hogs and other livestock for showing. He expects an even bigger turnout from people around the county.
"From rides to games to foods and arts and craft, the Schuylkill County Fair has something everyone can enjoy."
The weeklong fair has several tractor pull events and features entertainment every night, including music artist David Cassidy of "The Partridge Family" fame on Saturday.
Even with all the entertainment, Kennedy says he's hoping kids who attend the fair will learn farming and agricultural practices.
"Our mission is to educate the public through all means possible, whether that be teaching them to make soap from milk."
Enter the art barn; it's filled with arts and crafts for kids of all ages to enjoy.
Lauren Anderson, the youth education director, says the barn will help kids grow while having fun.
"Whether you want to be a doctor or dentist, mechanic, you all have a sense of creativity, so art is huge, plus it's just fun," said Anderson.
The Schuylkill County Fair runs through Saturday near Summit Station.
