Preparing for the cold ahead of Schuylkill Winterfest

As temperatures are expected to take a major dip this weekend, organizers of Schuylkill Winterfest are taking extra steps to help keep attendees warm.

POTTSVILLE, Pa. — Schuylkill Winterfest will be back in downtown Pottsville this weekend for the first time since 2020.

Robert Carl is the President of the Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce. He says he's not too concerned about the cold weather.

"It's winter fest. And yes, it's gonna be cold, but we are going to warm up people's hearts and make this a great outing," said Robert Carl, President Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce.

Organizers hope to bring a seasonal boost to business and an opportunity for residents to have something to do during a chilly weekend.

"Bringing the community together for commerce, but also for great fun, great entertainment, and socialization, that in months of the year can be very dull and very dreary," said Carl.

With temperatures for Winterfest expected to be well below freezing, measures have been taken to make sure attendees stay warm.

Three truckloads of firewood were brought in to keep the many burn barrels stocked up.

"And that'll be all along the runway from Progress Avenue, where the vendors are, all the way down towards Alvernia University, where there's another big parking lot where the kid's zone will be. The idea is that along the way, people will stay as warm as they can or have spots they can stop when walking from one vendor to another," explained Carl.

If hanging outside isn't your thing, Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce Vice President Samantha Chivinski says people can warm up inside any of the participating businesses, "The idea is really to have a nice time outside but also take a walk downtown and see some of the great things that are happening inside some of our businesses."

Winterfest runs Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
