UPDATE: After snow, thousands in the area are in the dark

Outages drop, but more than 10,000 homes and businesses are without power Wednesday morning.

SCHUYLKILL COUNTY, Pa. — UPDATE: According to PPL, there are still more than 10,000 homes and businesses without power in our area.

Original story:

More than 40,000 homes and businesses in our area remained in the dark Tuesday afternoon, hours after a winter storm dumped heavy, wet snow.

According to an outage map hosted by PPL Electric Utilities, many of the outages are not expected to be restored until Wednesday or Thursday. However, spokeswoman Tracie Witter stressed that those are preliminary estimates. Power could be restored far sooner than that.

"Our crews are prepared to work around the clock," she said.

Most of the outages centered around Schuylkill and Northumberland Counties where a collective 33,463 are without power.

In some communities there, it seemed all encompassing. All of East Norwegian Township has lost power and three-fourths of Butler Township's 5,546 customers await restoration of service.
