SCHUYLKILL COUNTY, Pa. — Dozens of cats at the Hillside SPCA in Schuylkill County are looking for a home—not just for the holidays, but forever.
"They need help all year round. No matter the season, no matter the holiday, the weather, these animals need a home despite all of that. They don't know it's Christmas. They just know they're sitting in a shelter and want to get out," said Brooke Brenner, dog manager at the facility near Pottsville.
That's what the staff wants too, because the kennels are full.
"The whole year or more has been slow with adoptions. Any kind of movement has been slow because we have no room. So even incoming is slow because anything going out isn't happening."
Friday through Sunday, a "Santa" has offered to help find these dogs and cats a home by covering the $250 adoption fee.
"Reading and Northern Railroad is sponsoring all adoption fees. The only thing adopters have to pay for is a ($7) dog license," Brenner said.
Brenner adds that just because the adoption fee is waived doesn't mean one of the pets should be placed under the tree as a present.
"I personally would not like a pet as a gift. That's a lot of responsibility to take on as a gift. So even though it's around Christmas, I hope people keep that in mind."
Folks at Hillside SPCA are excited to get many of these animals into their forever homes this weekend so they can help more animals in need.
