Mark Atkinson appointed mayor of Pottsville

Atkinson was formally appointed Thursday afternoon during a special council meeting.

POTTSVILLE, Pa. — Pottsville has officially appointed councilman Mark Atkinson as its new mayor on Thursday.

During a special council meeting, the councilman was formally appointed to fill the vacancy of the office of mayor after Pottsville's previous mayor, Dave Clews, resigned in October.

Atkinson currently serves as acting mayor of Pottsville and was supposed to have a swear-in ceremony in late October. He told Newswatch 16 that a judge's emergency order halted the ceremony.

The swear-in ceremony is now expected on Monday before their regularly scheduled council meeting.

Atkinson has been on Pottsville's City Council since 2010. He's a Navy veteran and volunteers with the Phoenix Fire Company.
