POTTSVILLE -- Earlier this week we told you about a restaurant that closed in Pottsville because of the economy.
Now a businessman is getting ready to open a diner which has been closed for nearly two years.
Workers are busy fixing up the historic Garfield Diner in Pottsville. The restaurant is getting a once over, everything from fresh paint, to new wiring.
Mark Carter said his company got the electrical contract.
"I am so glad to be part of the restoration of the Garfield Diner," said Carter.
Carter adds that the Garfield is special to him.
"My grandfather's favorite president was John F. Kennedy and he had a rally here and when we first walked in and saw an old picture of him, it was quite, thinking about my grandfather, to think what a great place the Garfield Diner is," said Garfield.
The Garfield opened almost 50 years ago and has several owners who each closed the place. Ashraf Abouomar's family is taking over and they're ready for the challenge.
"I heard about the Garfield and I talked to the owner, and I make a deal with him, and I lease it for six years," said Abouomar.
Abouomar said he's a chef, has owned another restaurant, and has years of experience in the food business. He will offer a full menu.
"American food, Greek food, Italian food, a lot of salad, soup and gyros," explained Abouomar.
City Adminstrator Tom Palama said officials are excited about new life for the Garfield.
"The economy is a factor and for restaurants, it's always an issue. I guess if the owner establishes and they're making an investment and they're here for the long haul, and I think people will come out and support it," said Palama.
The owners of the Garfield Diner hope to have the diner open in two to three weeks.
