GIRARDVILLE, Pa. — Police evacuated a section of Girardville on Wednesday after a suspected explosive device was found.
Police responded to 30 West Main Street around 3:30 p.m. for a report of a possible explosive device found in the ceiling of a vacant apartment in the Schuylkill County borough.
Investigators said the device was a homemade pipe bomb with signs of electrical detonation.
A state police bomb squad "neutralized" the device.
While clearing the apartment, police found a second device in the ceiling which was also neutralized.
First responders said they've never worked a scene like this before.
"I'm in the fire service 50 years, and I've dealt with the bomb squad when we had to come in and take care of homemade fireworks, but never like this," said Rangers Hose Company Chief Frank Zangari.
State police say there is a person of interest but no one in custody.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Pennsylvania State Police Frackville station at 570-874-5300.
