Crews replacing problem poles in Ashland

We first told you about Ashland's falling light poles on Tuesday on Newswatch 16. Less than 24 hours later, crews from PPL are out replacing those problem poles.

ASHLAND, Pa. — Hometown Hero banners are the first things to come off the light poles along Centre Street in Ashland. After four poles fell over the last few weeks, PPL crews are replacing six faulty poles along the street.

"I'm assuming the text message that I got as far as PPL was they were going to be replacing six with fiberglass poles," said Ashland Assistant Fire Chief Charlie Orth.

On Tuesday, Ashland Mayor Daniel Weikel told Newswatch 16 that the light poles that have been up for over five decades are completely rusted out.

Borough residents are relieved that work is finally being done on these poles to ensure the safety of homes, businesses, and travelers along Centre Street."

"(The Hometown Hero banners will be) back up when we have good secure poles in that won't be a problem, and they should go back up," Sam Snyder said. 'They're for our good people that served our country. They deserve the right."

Borough officials tell us the Christmas lights will also be back up this winter to light up Ashland once again.
