Constituents react to Representative Dan Meuser's House speaker plans

Lawmakers on Capitol Hill have not named a new candidate for House speaker yet but Representative Dan Meuser is looking to put his name into the mix.

POTTSVILLE, Pa. — Three times this week, Republican Congressman Dan Meuser voted to support the bid of Ohio's Jim Jordan to be speaker of the House, and three times Jordan lost.

In an interview with Newswatch 16, Meuser said he may consider throwing his name into the mix.

"I feel very much I could, whether or not I get that opportunity. It's a long haul, it's a big step, but I'm going to make the case if given the opportunity," said Rep. Dan Meuser, (R) 9th District.

The Republican has represented Pennsylvania's 9th Congressional District since 2019.

The district covers all or part of 12 counties, including Schuylkill County, with a district office in Pottsville.

"I love the idea of a local person getting into the office, the fact that Jordan is stepping down, he didn't get the votes, let somebody else go," said Richard Grete, Pottsville.

Richard Grete of Pottsville is a registered Independent. While he's not familiar with Meuser's policies, Grete says somebody needs to take charge, "My true belief is the interim who took over he should have full access now we should not be shut down, it should be already run, but since they're not doing that, we definitely need the position filled."

"This responsibility lies on the Republicans; they need to find somebody who can reflect the voice of their party as well as be able to work with the Democrats," said Drew Spevak, Pottsville.

Drew Spevak of Pottsville is also a registered Independent. He understands the urgency to find a new speaker of the House but feels Meuser is not the right fit.

"I don't think he's capable, nor does he reflect the needs and wants of the people in Pennsylvania," said Spevak.

Although his decision to run has not been set in stone Congressman Meuser tells Newswatch 16 he will still support other candidates he feels he can work with.
