SUMMIT STATION -- It was a beautiful day to help the community.

More than 400 volunteers donated their time to help clean up Schuylkill County on Friday. People were hard at work all day at the Hawk Mountain Boy Scout Camp near Schuylkill Haven.

"They're out here from the goodness of their hearts because they truly want to help someone else," said Kim Malone, executive director of Schuylkill United Way.

The dozens of volunteers at Hawk Mountain did everything from painting, to raking, and even some heavy lifting.

"We've been doing a little of everything, sweating first of all."

But this year, the annual Schuylkill United Way event was a bit different. It was in memory of Orwigsburg native Captain Jason Jones and named in his honor.

The Army captain was killed last June while serving in Afghanistan. He was 29 years old.

"Jason was about volunteering. He was about helping the next person," said Malone.

Members of the Jones family have volunteered for the Schuylkill United Way for more than 50 years.

This year, Suzy Jones helped out for the first time in memory of her son.

"He always made a joke out of it and that's what we're doing today, the ladies and I. We've been laughing, cracking jokes, and having a good time."

Many of the volunteers sported t-shirts with Captain Jones' name on it while helping out and cleaning up.

"When I saw the T-shirts, I wanted to cry but for the first time it wasn't because I missed him. It was because I just felt so honored and so lucky to be his mother," said Suzy Jones.

The Army captain mom's said that he would be very proud of all the people who came out to help and laugh.
