PALMYRA TOWNSHIP -- The Arizona Cardinals have hired a woman as a coach, believed to be the first woman ever to hold the position in the NFL.
Four sisters got together for lunch at The Boathouse restaurant near Hawley. After Dr. Jen Welter was hired to be on the coaching staff during training camp as an intern, some see it as a move in the right direction for gender equality.
"I hope it's the start of change. I think if women have all the qualifications and experience, they should have all the same jobs," said Kris Murphy of Honesdale.
For these four women, it's not about the X's and Y's that make up your gender, but the X's and O's on the gridiron; expertise over exclusion.
"I think it's huge, a great opening for women," said Lois Schiavetta of Long Island. "This woman may have some difficulty but maybe it's time to open that door."
A lot of congratulations and well wishes have been pouring into Dr. Jen Welter after being named what's believed to be first assistant coach who's female in the NFL. One of those people congratulating her, the Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden.
"It might be a step forward. If she can do it then more power to her and whatever a man can do a woman can do more," added Sheila Hord of Tafton.
Not everyone believes Welter may be the most effective hire when it comes to football, especially the NFL, but instead believes business motives are behind her joining the pro ranks.
"They're trying to build up season ticket sales, and exposure to the NFL and particular team involved," said Stan Cisak also of Tafton.
