Polar plunge to benefit dive and rescue teams in Wayne, Pike counties

Some brave souls will take a frosty plunge into Lake Wallenpaupack this holiday weekend. Newswatch 16's Emily Kress explains how you could be one of them.

PAUPACK, Pa. — Dive team members are the people who jump into action on the lake no matter the weather to save lives.

"Both seasons have unique emergencies.. during ice season we do get some emergencies, whether it's ice fishermen who fall in or snowmobiles or quads, but the summertime is busy too," said Tafton Fire Company Dive Team Captain Charles Simone.

What better way to start the new year than taking a dip in Lake Wallenpaupack. The Tafton Fire Company Dive Team and The Ledgedale Dive Team are hosting their annual polar plunge at 1st Klas Marina on New Year's Day.

The dive team captains say this is the biggest fundraiser of the year.

"We get so much money from the townships, but we count on this every year to help support the expensive equipment it takes to equip our volunteers," said Simone.

It's also a way to show the community the work these volunteers do year-round.

"The lake is a big lake, and it is not the only lake that we service together. We only have so many people. As you know, everyone is a volunteer so sometimes you can't get a full crew during the day so many times we have to mix and match our teams together," said Ledgedale Dive Team Captain Joe Sledzinski.

Last year's plunge raised more than $20,000.
