Celebrating a neighbor's citizenship in Pike County

A young man in Pike County is a newly-minted citizen and his neighbors came out to show their support.

PIKE COUNTY, Pa. — Living in America, let alone living in Lehman Township near Bushkill, has been a dream come true for Jason Reyes Hernandez.

The 19 year old from Cuba moved to Pike County to live with his dad a little more than a year ago.

"My dad has been here forever. Like 20 years, 22 years ago, and I always wanted to come. I was waiting for the right time. It is what it is. I just decided to come here and have a great future," said Reyes Hernandez.

And now he says his future is much brighter. He just became a United States citizen.

After his citizenship ceremony in Philadelphia, Jason returned home to a decorated house and a drive-by parade.

Neighbors from across The Glen At Tamiment, came together to show their support.

"A lot of my other neighbors have been here know that their American dream is here and they are ending theirs here. Jason is just starting, so that's kind of special," said Christine Corbissero, a neighbor.

Neighbor and U.S. Army veteran Frederick Vance passed down a sentimental shirt to Jason that he wore during his service.

"When I got the word about this young man who does a lot for this neighborhood, especially for the pool, the kids, and stuff like that, I think it was a true honor for me, you know. I served this country and I just wanted to show my generosity to him," said Vance.

Jason has been hard at work since coming here, recently starting college online and working.

While he says his process to get to the United States hasn't been easy, he says it's been worth it.

"It's an honor. It feels good," he said. "Feels like I have a new homeland. It's incredible."
