Campers share their special connection to St. Joseph's Center, Go Joe

St. Joseph's Center holds a special place in the hearts of Linda and Michael Flanagan of Shore Forest Campground

HOP BOTTOM, Pa. — In less than one week, Meteorologist Joe Snedeker will kick off Go Joe 27, his yearly bike ride to benefit St. Joseph's Center.

Sponsors have joined the Newswatch 16 morning crew in the Backyard all week leading up to the big event.

On Wednesday, campers from Shore Forest Campground in Hop Bottom came to talk about their chicken barbeque fundraiser this weekend.

“We do this all day long. We have a full day of events, and then we serve dinner between 4 and 5," said Linda Flanagan.

St. Joseph's Center holds a special place in the hearts of Linda and Michael Flanagan.

Michael and his sister were adopted from there in the 1960s, and the couple's daughter Kelley lives there now.

“She has a life there that we could not provide for her at home,” said Michael Flanagan. “She went to a movie last night with her friends from her unit. We might be able to do that once in a while, but she has a great life."

Two years ago, Joe rode through Shore Forest Campground, and the campers were ready to greet him. Last year, they raised $30,000 for Go Joe and St. Joseph's Center.

"It's so heartwarming that the camping family that we have has adopted St. Joe's as their charity of choice. And to see what we've done over the years, it just keeps getting better,” said Michael Flanagan.

“It is wonderful to know that people at Shore Forest 100% support our family and our dreams to make St. Joseph's a successful fundraiser every year,” said Linda Flanagan.

The fundraiser runs this Saturday all day at Shore Forest Campground in Hop Bottom.

It includes a chicken barbeque dinner, bake sale, basket raffle, and cash raffle.

The campers at Shore Forest hope that adds up to a big check for St. Joe's again this year.
