SHAMOKIN, Pa. — On Friday, customers came and went at H&R Block in Shamokin. Some were getting last-minute filing done as Tax Day approaches.
"We're pretty busy, steady throughout most of the tax season but we see a last-minute rush here at the end of tax season. As April 15 gets closer, more and more people are finally deciding to get their taxes done," Lamont Masser said.
If you're filing at the last minute, there are some tips you should know, such as making sure you have all your documents.
"Social Security numbers for husband, wife, children, anybody else who's on the tax return, and if you have any types of deductions or special credits, if you bought a hybrid vehicle, if you put solar panels on your house, make sure you have those dollar figures so we can help you get the most of the deductions and credits that you're entitled to."
Another tip is to make sure you have all of your documents together.
"We don't mind working with people at the last minute, but we do like it when the information is good and solid and good information that we can work with."
Masser says other mistakes people make are not knowing what they're missing. Monday is the tax deadline, but if you don't have all of your information ready, you can get an extension.
"It's an automatic extension approved by the IRS. The only problem is, it is not an extension of time to pay, it's an extension of time to file, so if you do think you're going to owe money, you have to send in a payment with that extension to avoid penalties."
