UPDATE: Sunbury's police chief turned in his badge Monday. Brad Hare announced his resignation over the weekend.

His decision comes just as the results of an internal investigation into the department and complaints against two officers are about to be made public.

Hare has asked Sunbury City Council to allow him to stay with the department as a corporal.

Newswatch 16 spoke with him Monday night. He says he is proud of what the department accomplished in his 17 months as chief.

"I have 17 months under my belt and we've made a lot of things go forward, a lot of progress, so hopefully whoever they do put in I can make sure the transition is easy and it'll be smooth and we'll be okay," added Hare.

Sunbury's mayor did not appoint an acting chief at Monday's city council meeting in Northumberland County.

SUNBURY -- It's been an interesting 24 hours for the Sunbury Police Department. Its police chief resigned, and in about an hour, a report is expected to be released by city council about the department's wrongdoings.

In the last year, the Sunbury Police Department has been the subject of multiple investigations. It started in January because of two complaints about two different officers. So, an internal investigation was done.

"We come up with our findings and one officer got a week off without pay and the other officer got three weeks off without pay," Mayor David Persing said.

City council was not satisfied with the results of the investigation, so they are doing their own investigation, which is costing Sunbury at least $16,000. The mayor says he hopes to put an end to this investigation, and address it at Monday's city council meeting.

"We have people covering the streets of Sunbury. Nobody should worry about any major crime or anything like that. We'll do our best to get this straightened out and get back into a positive light for the police department," Persing said.

Sunday night, Chief Brad Hare resigned. Hare was Sunbury's police chief for about a year and a half. He told the mayor, "Everything I presented to you that I have done has been justified, but the council has continued to doubt my actions."

"He was a corporal when he was promoted from before and he will go back to being a corporal, and he's going to continue on being a police officer," Persing said.

The majority of the people we spoke with like Brad Hare and say they don't think he should have resigned.

"I think he should just stick it out. Who cares what other people think. He did a great job," Rudolph Frazier said.

"You're just kind of like dumbfounded because he was just through the drive-thru yesterday in his uniform, what are you going to be doing now? I can't believe he just up and left like that, wow," Erica Thomas said.

Mayor Persing will appoint an acting police chief at Monday night's council meeting.
