Sunbury appoints new police chief

Chief Travis Bremigen was sworn in as Sunbury's new police chief Monday afternoon.

SUNBURY, Pa. — The city of Sunbury welcomed its newest police chief Monday night.

For 22 years, Travis Bremigen has climbed the ranks through the department that, over the last decade, has seen four different chiefs.

"It's a great honor to be able to serve the citizens of Sunbury getting this last step to basically be able to have an over-say of the department and to take our department in the direction that is totally forward," said Chief Travis Bremigen, Sunbury Police Department.

Bremigen's been serving as interim chief ever since former police Chief Brad Hare stepped down. Hare was arrested and charged back in October with four counts of theft.

He is accused of stealing nearly $7,000 from the Americus Hose Company, where he served as secretary, all while being the city's police chief.

Chief Bremigen wants to move on from those days, "I can't speak for that one incident, and I won't speak for that one incident, but what I will say is that we have a terrific police department, we have a department of men and women that are here to basically serve and protect, and we're going to continue to do that and move forward."

"The entire force showed up here, his family showed up here to show the support they have for him," said Mayor Josh Brosious.

For Mayor Josh Brosious, this was his first time swearing in a police chief, and, he says, hopefully, his last, "When he was the interim, we did lots of great things to help move the police department forward, to try new things. I look forward to trying more things coming into 2024 and his tenure filling out."

Chief Bremigen plans to have an open-door policy with city residents.

As for former chief Brad Hare, his case is still moving through the court system.
