SHAMOKIN -- While it's not a large ball made out of crystals, a piece of coal decorated in lights symbolizes New Year's Eve in Shamokin.

"It's our heritage. That's what made our town famous. That's what our town is noted for," said Shamokin Mayor Bill Milbrand.

Since 1988, Shamokin has held a New Year's Eve celebration by dropping a 100-pound piece of "coal" made out of styrofoam. Mayor Milbrand says it is an alcohol-free event with vendors.

"We also have a DJ and a big-screen TV where they broadcast the Times Square event," Milbrand said.

People who live in Shamokin say they and their children look forward to the event every year.

"They have lots of vendors selling glowy stuff, music, I don't know. It's pretty fun," said Matt Raynor of Shamokin.

"They get to see all their friends here so they really enjoy that. They make plans every year, have all their friends come down," said Brianna Leese of Shamokin.

Milbrand says he expects around 400 people to attend the celebration. The event is funded by the city of Shamokin and accounting firm Klacik and Associates, so it does not cost taxpayers any money.

The event starts at 11 and the coal will be lowered starting at 11:59. After that there will be a fireworks display to round out the night.
