SHAMOKIN--When you think of Shamokin, the word "coal" tends to come to mind. That's because the city is in the middle of the Coal Region of Pennsylvania. So it's only natural that instead of dropping a regular ball on New Year's Eve, Shamokin drops a piece of coal!
"This is just kind of a mini New York City and I think it's great that the people have the opportunity to come down and do this," Mayor Bill Milbrand said.
The coal drop has taken place in Shamokin for almost 30 years. Around 11pm on New Year's Eve, people gather at Market and Independence Streets for food, fireworks and to watch the 100 lb piece of styrofoam coal drop.
"I think it's great because town is packed so it's awesome," Lynnsey Seedor said.
Parents say they enjoy the event because it's family friendly, and a fun way to ring in the new year with friends.
"It is a blast. There's a ton of people down here, there's a few vendors and we just talk and reminisce about the year and have a good time," Tammy Villarrelo said.
Many people say it's a tradition.
"Ever since I was this big, since I was a baby," Seedor said.
"This will be my ninth," Villarrelo said.
Other communities hold similar celebrations. In Beavertown they drop a beaver and here in Sunbury at the Hotel Edison, they drop a light bulb.
