NORTHUMBERLAND — Live music, food, games and crafts — some of the ingredients of a successful street fair in Northumberland called Pineknotter Days. It’s in its 44th year.

“It’s so cute. It’s such a quaint little gathering that we love coming to every year,” Julie Kauwell said.

Pineknotter Days is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Northumberland-Point Township. It started on Saturday and runs through Friday.

“Today’s probably the biggest with the craft show. We probably have about 2-3,000 people go through today. We’ll probably have 1,000 plus each night during the week then, too,” Chairman Jeff Kimball said.

The event is held at and around King Street Park in the borough. The roads in the area close for the event.

Many volunteer organizations set up stands here at Pineknotter Days to raise money for their groups.

“We bread our own fish, put our own seasoning to it. Our goal is 1,200 pieces of fish a year,” Ty Ulrich said.

While there are all kinds of different foods at Pineknotter Days, people line up for the fried fish sandwiches made by firefighters from Northumberland Fire Company Number One.

“We enjoy ourselves doing this. We just love the people, the atmosphere of selling and cooking, and different smells and different foods,” Ulrich said.

So what is a Pineknotter? Kiwanis Club members say it is a tough person because a pine-knot is where the branch goes into the tree and forms a tight knot. There are a lot of dedicated people who attend the fair every year.

“Every year! I texted her last night and said, are we going to Pineknotter days tomorrow? She said yep,” Kauwell said.

Some people tell Newswatch 16 they consider Pineknotter Days the official kick-off to the Fourth of July holiday.
