SHAMOKIN, Pa. — It's quiet right now at the Oasis Community Recovery Club in Shamokin, but throughout the week there is a wide variety of activities here. The center holds meetings for people in recovery.
"But then outside of that we do build on it with free events for families to come in. That could be any kind of counseling that we get available through our partnerships with other nonprofits or county and medical facilities," Vice President of Oasis Community Recovery Club Tiffany Kaseman said.
Oasis Community Recovery Club is one of more than 300 nonprofits participating in Raise the Region this week. The two-day online fundraiser collects donations for nonprofits in Columbia, Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder, and Union Counties.
"It's big for us to keep that network going and growing and just have that ability for people if they're not here to give if they can comfortably give to provide something that day, it's a big deal for us," Kaseman said.
Next door at the Shamokin-Coal Township Public Library, employees say donations from Raise the Region will go far.
"Things like salary, general operations, but then our programming schedule, which we've been building. Our roster has been growing and growing for programs for kids and adults, so to keep that ball rolling it's really important we just keep the funds coming in," Library Director of Shamokin-Coal Township Public Library Ben Shemory said.
Library Director Ben Shemory says this is more than just a place to check out books. The Shamokin-Coal Township Library is a pillar of this community.
"As far as a community hub, a center, is really what we're growing ourselves into. Just that way for our sake and everyone else's too. A place you can just go, nothing is expected of you, you don't have to buy anything, there's no expectation," Shemory said.
Raise the Region starts Wednesday at 6 p.m.
