An animal hospital in Northumberland County got a makeover...and then some! The Sunbury Animal Hospital moved into its new location this week on Route 890.
The veterinary office moved into this new $3 million facility this week, after more than three years of planning.
"So to actually be in here and working out of it is spectacular," Dr. Beverly Shaw said.
Doctors Beverly Shaw and James Temple knew they needed to expand the Sunbury Animal Hospital. The old location on Route 61 had 6,000 square feet of space. The new one has 16,000, which is plenty of room for the seven full-time doctors and 50 employees.
"We were working a whole lot of doctors out of a very little space, which meant sometimes we had enough help to get the animals moved through, but we had no space to put them into," Shaw said.
"Traditional care that you associate with veterinary hospitals. Surgery, emergency care, diagnostics. We have a very strong laboratory," Temple said.
Temple gave Newswatch 16 a tour of the new facility. In addition to the physical therapy unit, grooming and boarding kennel areas, there are also more examination and operating rooms.
It's not just dogs and cats that can come to the Sunbury Animal Hospital. They've always treated farm animals, but they did that on the farm. Now horses and cattle can be brought here to be operated on.
"You can't just do it anywhere. What we're hoping to do here is abdominal surgeries at a higher level than we have in the past," Temple said.
Jennifer Stence was impressed when she picked up her four-legged friend.
"I was excited. I had some of my kids with me and we came in and it's gorgeous," Stence said.
"I'm amazed. It's beautiful. Even the outside, it looks like a castle," Donna Carl said.
The Sunbury Animal Hospital plans to become a 24-hour facility over next few months.
