COAL TOWNSHIP -- Volunteers were busy inside the kitchen at God's Chuckwagon near Shamokin. They made soups and desserts to serve inside their mobile soup kitchen. God's Chuckwagon travels to eight communities weekly in Schuylkill and Northumberland Counties. The non-profit runs on donations.
"100 percent of what we get goes right back into running God's Chuckwagon," Bowers said.
Jim Bowers and his wife Janet run God's Chuckwagon. Jim says last year they spent $60,0000.
"Last year we served 22,570 meals," Bowers said.
Because God's Chuckwagon serves so many meals, they need to move into a bigger building. Recently someone donated a building, but before they can move in, a lot of repair work needs to be done.
"I'm probably looking at about $50,000 to be able to get into the building," Bowers said.
Bowers is asking the community for donations so God's Chuckwagon can keep serving meals. If the nonprofit cannot move into its new building, God's Chuckwagon won't be able to keep up with the growing demand. That makes people nervous.
"When the food bank's not going, they're going. They help people, especially the elderly," Jalessa Smith said.
"I'm afraid it would affect a lot of people because they're there and they give out food and at the holidays and stuff they give out blankets," Pat Long said.
Bowers says no donation is too small. To donate, click here.
