Growing graffiti problem in Shamokin

Newswatch 16's Mackenzie Aucker spoke with officers about the issue.

SHAMOKIN, Pa. — Graffiti can be found written on the walls of buildings around Shamokin. The vandalism is spread throughout the city and police are searching for whoever is responsible.

"The graffiti behind us—we believe might be a second person involved, the first set of graffiti we have is the same mark throughout the area, this is totally different and with different color spray paint," said Chief Ray Siko, Shamokin Police Department

Police Chief Ray Siko says the person or persons behind the graffiti are getting into secluded areas where they can't be seen. Officers don't believe the vandalism is gang-related.

"And basically, they're just committing the crime by tagging or doing criminal mischief to the properties with the spray paint."

So far about 15 spots in the city have been hit with graffiti.

"It appears right now throughout the city, there's not one random area in town and we're seeing throughout our whole city," said Chief Siko.

Police say if they catch the perpetrators, they could face a slew of charges, including criminal mischief.

"The second part is if they're trespassing on people's property, if it's late at night, you also have the point of loitering and prowling in the area, so there's several crimes that are being violated depending on the time of day, but the big one would be the criminal mischief to the property," said Chief Siko.

Anyone with information on the graffiti is asked to contact police in Shamokin.
