SUNBURY, Pa. — A bright yellow school bus was parked at Memorial Acres in Sunbury. But there were no children on board, only food. This is God's Chuckwagon.
"We've been getting phone calls. When are you coming back? We need you. It plays on your heart," Pastor James Bowers said.
Pastor James Bowers and his wife Janet had run the mobile soup kitchen for 18 years. Because of health reasons and a decline in donations, they were forced to close down earlier this year. But now they are back.
"There's more homeless now than ever, more people in need than ever. Our sole concentration is going to be God's Chuckwagon now. We closed the church, and it's all going to be God's Chuckwagon. We're working towards feeding the people," Bowers said.
Bowers says God's Chuckwagon will start slow, feeding people every Monday from noon to 1:00 p.m. at Memorial Acres in Sunbury. Depending on future donations and volunteers, they hope to expand. People are happy to see God's Chuckwagon back on the road.
"They help out everyone who absolutely needs it. In these times of need right now, with the economy and everything, they do good work for everyone," Lawrence Oyster said.
"We need something like that in the area, just to give a blessing and help the community. It's really great, especially when people are down on their luck," Timothy Willis said.
Bowers says he and his wife plan to run God's Chuckwagon for as long as they are able. If you'd like to donate, you can send a check to:
