Free Thanksgiving meals in Sunbury

God's Chuckwagon, a mobile soup kitchen, gave out free turkey dinners with all the fixings in Sunbury.

SUNBURY, Pa. — People lined up on Monday outside a school bus on Memorial Drive in Sunbury. They celebrated Thanksgiving a few days early with a free meal.

"This is our way of helping the people who can't afford to give thanks, that they, in their way, can give thanks for everything that they have. It's a blessing for us to give to them, and it's a blessing for them to receive it, so we're happy to do it," Pastor James Bowers said.

Pastors James and Janet Bowers run God's Chuckwagon. Each week, they serve free meals out of this bus.

This week, they prepared a large Thanksgiving feast.

"Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, cranberry sauce, the whole thing, homemade cupcakes," Bowers said.

God's Chuckwagon also gave out free hats, scarves, and gloves.

People were happy with the free food and winter accessories.

"It helps a lot for people who can't afford their food, and I've been here a couple of times," Ammon Derr said.

"They're doing a marvelous job, I think, and the food is definitely good," Ginny Beaver said.

"That's what we're told to do. We're told to take care of his people, and that's what we're trying to do," Bowers said.

God's Chuckwagon serves free food in Sunbury every Monday from noon to 1 p.m.
