Former Sunbury Police Chief Brad Hare arrested, charged with theft from hose company

Hare was arrested on Wednesday, accused of stealing nearly $7,000 from a fire company’s social hall.

SUNBURY, Pa. — Former Sunbury Police Chief Brad Hare is accused of stealing nearly $7,000 from a fire company in Sunbury. Hare faces four charges, including a felony charge of theft by unlawful taking in  Northumberland County.

According to state police, members of the Americus Hose Company suspected money was missing after paying out a share of profits to the owner of video gaming machines.

On August 5, cameras were installed in the office of the fire company's social club.

Investigators said the video showed Hare taking money from the office on August 14, August 22, and August 24.

According to court papers, officers from Americus confronted Hare on the evening of August 24, and he confessed to taking the money.

A week later, on August 31, Sunbury Mayor Josh Brosious announced Travis Bremigen as acting police chief.

At the time, the mayor would only say that Hare was unavailable.

The president of the Americus Hose Company told Newswatch 16 in a statement, “Our organizational structure relies on trusted volunteers to manage our finances. Unfortunately, this trust was likely violated. Theft or purposeful misappropriation of funds cannot be tolerated and must be determined by our legal system.”

Hare retired from the Sunbury Police Department earlier this week after 22 years on the force. He was named chief in 2019 and also briefly served as chief in 2015.

The mayor has not said whether Hare is still getting his pension. Hare is expected in court for a preliminary hearing later this month.
