MILTON, Pa. — A fire broke out Wednesday afternoon in a restaurant in Northumberland County.
Flames started at Italian Terrace off Route 405 in West Chillisquaque Township, south of Milton, around 1 p.m.
Some people driving on Route 405 saw the smoke and called 911.
It took crews about an hour to put out the fire.
The fire chief tells Newswatch 16 the smoke was heaviest in the back of the building where the kitchen is located.
The fire was in the ceiling, which crews had to pull down to put out the blaze. Crews say there is significant damage to the inside of the restaurant, but no one was here at the time, and no one was hurt.
"Crews worked diligently to get the ceiling pulled down so we could get to the scene of the fire. That effort was somewhat hampered due to renovations that have taken place over the years that created void spaces for fire to travel," said William Cameron Engine Company Chief James Blount.
A sign in front of the restaurant says it was closed from December 30 until February 8, and it was scheduled to reopen today.
A state police fire marshal was on scene to figure out what caused the fire. The chief says it does not appear to be suspicious.
