Combating crime in Sunbury

While residents say they aren't surprised by the sound of gunfire, police are working to combat it.

SUNBURY, Pa. — It was at the corner of North 8th Street and Packer Street, where police in Sunbury say they were called for a report of shots fired just after 1 p.m. Monday.

This did not come as a surprise to Sunbury resident Shauntae Tyson.

"Because we hear gunshots around here a lot lately," explained Tyson.

At the same time, an unrelated fight broke out in a nearby apartment complex, where police say someone brandished a firearm.

"An individual reported that a handgun was pointed at another individual," explained Sunbury Police Chief Travis Bremigen.

Both incidents are under investigation, and the department is asking for the public's help with tips or video surveillance.

"I do get scared, but I don't really come outside too often if I don't have to besides work and going to the store," added Tyson.

The police chief in Sunbury tells Newswatch 16 crime here is not something new, but the department is bringing in something new to combat it.

"The best that we can. Again, there's crime everywhere, but at the same time, we are going to take a very proactive stance on this," said Chief Bremigen.

Three full-time officers and four part-time officers were sworn in this week to help the department.

Meanwhile, people who live in the city hope this helps with the crime they say they have grown accustomed to.

"I do hope Sunbury gets better for everybody else and all the little kids that want to walk around," said Tyson.

The police chief says in addition to the new officers he hopes residents will also help keep the community safe by saying something when they see something.
