MOUNT CARMEL, Pa. — It was a rocky road to Kansas City's latest Super Bowl win. For the second time in Super Bowl history, the game wasn't decided in the regulation 60 minutes.
The San Francisco 49ers scored first in overtime with this field goal to go up 22 -19. The Kansas City Chiefs got the ball back, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes moved the team downfield to a touchdown with seconds left. The Chiefs won 25 - 22.
After the game, Head Coach Andy Reid thanked everyone in the Kansas City organization, including General Manager Brett Veach, a Mount Carmel native.
"I appreciate every day I have to do this. I work for a great owner, ownership, family, between Mark Donovan, Veach, myself, we're lucky to be Kansas City Chiefs," Reid said. "That part feels good. We have a good locker room and good coaches."
Last week, Veach told Newswatch 16 that this wasn't your typical championship season. The Chiefs finished the regular season with an 11 - 6 Record and were the third seed in the American Conference playoffs.
"This season, in many ways, didn't go exactly how we scripted it, but I think there was always a lot of confidence," Veach said last week.
This is the third Super Bowl victory since Brett Veach became Kansas City's general manager—Super Bowl 54, 57, and now 58. This is the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls since the New England Patriots in 2003 and 2004.
