WASHINGTONVILLE -- The last large coal-fired electric plant in our area could soon also be powered by natural gas.
Talen Energy told investors the company is thinking about making its Montour power plant in Washingtonville a "dual-fire" plant, meaning it could make electricity using either coal, natural gas, or both.
If Talen decides to convert the plant, it could cost as much as $100 million and would not be complete until 2018.
Talen says the idea is being considered due to the cost-effectiveness of natural gas, but keeping coal as an option for more flexibility.
The plant employs 200 workers and produces enough power for one million homes.
