4-H kids show off hard work at Montour-Delong Community Fair

Newswatch 16's Mackenzie Aucker caught up with some 4-H kids using the fair as an opportunity to show their livestock.

MONTOUR COUNTY, Pa. — The Montour-Delong Community Fair near Washingtonville is in its 86th year. Not only does the fair feature old favorites but there are also several new events this year.

"We have live reindeer, permanent jewelry, some woodworking, we have a woodcarver that's going to carve live at the end of the week that's definitely exciting and something to look forward to," said Julie Cope, Montour-Delong community fair president.

One thing you can always find happening at the fair is livestock competitions. Mackenzie Heyler from Watsontown was getting her sheep, Carl, ready to show.

"I take him to shows, different fairs, and I jack paw as well and I get to learn new experiences," said Mackenzie Heyler of Watsontown.

4-H kids spend months preparing their animals for fair season.

"So we have to like work them every day, exercise them, like keep their muscle, make sure they don't like get too skinny or too fat, make sure we're giving them the proper amount of feed, like to make sure they're staying hydrated," said Heyler.

"I take him to the wash rack, I wish him all out, and I bring him back over here. I blow out their legs and brush out their legs, and then I put the blanket back on—put the blanket on them, and then when it's time to show, I take them over to the ring and take off their blanket,"  said Liegha Vargeson of Bloomsburg.

Mackenzie Fox from Bloomsburg says it's a lot of work getting her cow Daisy ready but says it's worth it in the end.

"To get to walk her in the arena and get a ribbon to hang on your wall, so it's really fun to do this."

There's a lot to do at the Montour-Delong Fair. On Thursday after 4 p.m., Mackenzie and Joe Snedeker will be there for Day 4 of Go Joe 27.
