COOPER TOWNSHIP -- The SPCA near Danville is closed until further notice because officials say several dogs at the facility have an upper respiratory infection.

We found people who say they were surprised when they showed up to adopt a dog or drop one off.

Angie Shultz and her family from Berwick say they have to get rid of their dog Trixie.

"I have a Siberian Husky and they don't get along. She's going after him probably because he overpowers her," Shultz said.

The Shultz family brought Trixie to the Pennsylvania SPCA center near Danville, but it was closed.

"It's a little aggravating. It's a 25-minute ride and we're trying to find a good home for the dog and not being able to. It's kind of aggravating."

The SPCA says the facility near Danville and a location in Philadelphia are both temporarily closed. A spokesperson for the Pennsylvania SPCA says some of the dogs have an upper respiratory infection. They are contagious, so they are being quarantined. They also say the shelter near Danville will undergo several major cleanings.

The SPCA transports dogs and cats to the Danville area shelter after they are spayed and neutered in Philadelphia and they said, "We contacted people who recently adopted animals from the shelters and are keeping in close contact with them."

"Nobody wants to adopt an ill animal," said Steve Seiders.

Seiders and his family from Pottsville came to the shelter to adopt an animal. They turned around and went home.

"We figured we'd stop in and see what kind of animals they had to adopt. We just stopped in and saw the notice on the door that they were closed for cleaning."

The SPCA representative says she expects both shelters to be closed for several weeks. They are not sure what the respiratory infection is and they are still investigating.
