Working in the bitter cold in Monroe County

Many are working under the cold conditions in Stroudsburg.

STROUDSBURG, Pa. — Every day you'll find Ansun Ruffin walking around the Borough of Stroudsburg. Checking for expired meters and writing tickets.

It's a job he says he enjoys, just not during this time of year.

"It's been a little hard cause, like, it has been very cold," said Ruffin. "Like once I lose feeling in my hands and stuff, I try to duck down into a store real quick just to warm up."

Ruffin isn't the only one who spends his entire workday outside.

Joseph Castro works in all types of conditions, too, delivering mail to homes and businesses.

"We're out here for a little over 7 hours or so.  Just keep going along and push through it, honestly. It is a little difficult, but as long as you layer up, we should be fine," said Castro.

Layering up is exactly what Wayne LaBar did as he worked to clear the borough's outdoor ice skating rink.

"Just a hoodie and a cap that usually works and coveralls, you know, your underclothes. A sweatshirt and a hood, and if it gets too hard, too cold, then you bring the canvas Carhart out," said LaBar, who works for Stroudsburg Public Works.

Newswatch 16 spoke with people who have to work outside in the cold, saying that if they had a choice, they would rather not.

"I prefer the summertime 'cause I don't have to wear all these layers, but the wintertime isn't that bad," said Castro.

"I don't like it," LaBar said. "Should be in Florida, but you deal with it."

"I started in the summer, so to start in the summer and do this is a little hard, but it's alright," said Ruffin.

The good news is spring will be here before we know it.
