"We are very lucky that no one was hit by the gunfire"—ESU police investigating shots fired

Students were back in classes at East Stroudsburg University on Monday after shots rang out on campus after a Halloween event over the weekend.

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. — Students file into Zimbar Gym at East Stroudsburg University on Monday morning for class.

On Saturday night, the gym was used by the university to host a Halloween party for students, overseen by faculty.

"They noticed a number of non-students entering the facility at Zimbar Gym, and they notified the police department for assistance. Officers arrived and began to disperse the crowd," said Ralph Elick, interim campus police chief.

Campus Police Chief Ralph Elick says not long after, five gunshots rang out in a nearby parking lot. Campus police sent students an alert.

Some students Newswatch 16 spoke with say they weren't at the Halloween event but are still shocked to hear what happened.

"I was like, oh my god, that is so crazy, that's ghetto," said ESU sophomore Alana Beharry.

"I live off campus so it didn't really bother me, I knew the school would handle it so it wasn't a big deal," said ESU senior Damion Buckley.

Police took two people into custody- but say they were not involved in the gunfire.

No buildings were hit by bullets, and no one was reported to be hurt.

"Safety of the students is paramount of the concern of the administration, and we are very lucky that no one was hit by the gunfire," said Chief Elick.

Campus police say as part of the investigation they're looking through video from nearly 500 cameras on campus.

"Any eyewitnesses that observed this or have cell phone footage of this they are encouraged to contact the police department," said Chief

Students say they have mixed feelings about safety on campus.

"Pretty much me and my friend group stay out of the way and do our own thing. With that incident, we knew we weren't part of it, so it really wasn't bothering us," said Buckley.

"I always kind of have that fear because, like, school shootings typically only happen in America, and that has been my fear since elementary school from past events that have happened. But I don't know, I never thought it would happen like that," said Beharry.

Campus police say the incident remains an active investigation.
