UPDATE: Body recovered after water rescue

Crews responded to a call for three people in the water along Beaver Dam Road near Long Pond.

MONROE COUNTY, Pa. — The Monroe County Coroner's Office confirmed Thursday evening that the body of a 31-year-old man from Philadelphia was recovered from the scene of a water rescue near Long Pond in Monroe County.

According to Pocono Mountain Regional Police, the man and three juveniles had been kayaking in a lake along Beaver Dam Road in Tunkhannock Township.

Around 3:00 Thursday afternoon, a kayak being used by one of the juveniles overturned. The juvenile was wearing a life jacket and was eventually able to swim to safety.

Police say the man, who was not wearing a life jacket, got into the water and tried to turn the kayak right side up. He could not. He went under while trying to swim back to shore.

Crews recovered his body a few hors later.

An autopsy on the man is being scheduled.
