KUNKLETOWN, Pa. — A fire company in the Poconos is bringing back a popular monthly breakfast tradition after doing away with it in 2022.
In a few weeks, the tables and chairs inside the Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Company in Eldred Township will again be filled.
More than a year after the fire company canceled its monthly breakfast, the tradition is making a comeback.
"We did it over 30 years. It was starting to taper off. We weren't getting the customer base. The price of food was going up, and everything was a perfect storm, and it was feasible to continue doing that fundraiser for us," said Fire Chief Brian Stankovich.
Everything from scrambled eggs to French toast and bacon is on the menu.
The chief said they brought it back because the community missed it.
"Throughout the year, community members have been asking to bring it back into the community. They said they looked forward to it, so we talked about it internally. We said it was going to be doable," Stankovich said.
The breakfast will now be served buffet-style, much different than how they did it in years past. The chief says the change will address several issues they were facing before.
"Be easier for manpower for us. It gives better value to the customer. We can do more. People can get in and eat right away. All the same foods that we've done before on the buffet, but it will be all-you-can-eat, pay one price. Go through the line, and people will serve you," said Stankovich.
About half of the fire company's budget comes from fundraisers like the breakfast.
Firefighters say it's important for people to come out and support them because it's the only way to ensure the fire company's survival.
"Without them, there is no need for us, so we need help as much as they need our help in time of need. So, we have to be there for them. They have to be there for us," said volunteer firefighter Chuck Hayes.
The monthly breakfast at the Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Company returns on February 4 from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Breakfast for adults is $12, breakfast for children between 6 and 11 is $6, and children 5 and under are free.
Their menu items include:
