SAYLORSBURG -- A World War II veteran with one amazing story was honored in Monroe County for his service to our country.

The Marine Corps League of Monroe County presented Dominic Sorrenti with an award and citations from the state house and senate.

The ceremony took place at Sorrenti's business -- Sorrenti Cherry Valley Vineyards in Saylorsburg.

Sorrenti enlisted in the Navy when he was just 13 years old, using his 16-year-old brother's birth certificate.

"So, I met a guy there who showed me how to get into the Navy underage," Sorrenti recalled. "I was 13. I went down to Miami. I went to the recruiting station. I lied about my age. My mother had to sign a little release slip and off I went into the Navy. I was only 13!"

After 11 weeks in the Navy, officials discovered his real age and kicked him out.

A year later, at age 14, Sorrenti successfully enlisted with the Merchant Marines.

The next year, his ship was hit by a torpedo and sunk off the coast of Belgium.

After the war ended, Sorrenti continued serving our country, enlisting in the Army until 1949.
