MONROE COUNTY, Pa. — Students are thinking outside the box. The regional competition of Odyssey of the Mind held at Pocono Mountain West High School brought nearly 350 students together to put their problem-solving skills to the test.
"That's one of the important things about Odyssey of the Mind: divergent thinking, there is more than one way to solve a problem, and there's no one right answer," said Ryan Balton, PA Odyssey of the Mind Public Relations.
Teams are given a problem to solve at the beginning of the school year. They spend months coming up with a solution using science, technology, engineering, and math.
"We did a problem with batteries dying, and it's all about function," said Ruby Long, Swiftwater Intermediate School.
Then, they sprinkle in the arts by presenting their solution through a theatrical performance.
"It's fun to be able to hand out with your friends for the whole day and be able to solve a problem, and once you get out on that stage, you just put your heart out, and it's so much fun," said Natalie Collier, Swiftwater Intermediate School.
This year, Athens Area School District in Bradford County expanded their teams from one to five.
"I am just filled with pride watching them go out there. They are obviously a little nervous; we all get a little nervous; it's like stage fright, but watching them, I'm just so proud," said Erica Greer, Athens Area School District.
"The students are motivated in a different way; it's not homework, it's not a test or quiz. Academia is so important, but this is a way they are self-motivated, and they motivate each other as a team to solve a problem and build skills," said Balton.
Regional winners will move on to the state competition in April at Pocono Mountain East High School. Grants are also available for more schools to get involved.
