MONROE COUNTY, Pa. — Volunteers in Monroe County spent part of their morning stopping by several homeless encampments in this part of the Poconos to kick-start "Save a Life" day.
"Addiction does not discriminate, that is for sure; my heart is with the homeless encampments. They don't have the resources or the transportation or the whereabouts to get the help," said Brian Sabo with STR Behavioral Health.
Carbon Monroe Pike Drug and Alcohol teamed up with several other agencies to help spread the word about recovery resources.
Recovery specialists say it's best to meet people where they're at.
"I'm in recovery myself, and I think that when I got clean, I really could have used a program like this," said recovery specialist Stan Lewandowski with Carbon Monroe Pike Drug and Alcohol Commission.
Advocates handed out free Narcan boxes outside the district attorney's office on the main street in Stroudsburg.
"Really, it is a simple device. It's just a nasal spray. You insert it into the nose and spray all of it."
Another stop for the day is connecting with students at East Stroudsburg University.
"A lot of students may bypass this because, just like I almost did, you never know the importance of using this to help someone that you may not know has these complications."
Advocates are ensuring that Narcan is in everyone's hands and that people know how to use it.
"The person that is overdosing isn't going to be able to give themselves Narcan. Oftentimes, we hear, "I don't need that. I don't do those drugs, but it's really not for the person who is doing the drugs because they are going to be unconscious," explained Lewandowski.
"It makes me feel better equipped than I was 10 seconds ago; I'm happy I did stop," said Kenner.
