Road work underway on Route 115 in Monroe County

Newswatch 16's Emily Kress spoke with businesses and drivers in Chestnuthill Township about the project on Route 115.

MONROE COUNTY, Pa. — Road closed signs are now on Route 115 North in Chestnuthill Township near Effort.

PennDOT started the latest phase of the Merwinsburg Realignment Project, and drivers are not happy.

"It's a pain; it's a stupid project the way they have it set up. I mean, it is needed it has been needed for a long time, but the timing of the way they do it that's not very smart," said George Rothwell of Effort.

"I'm just tired of it just to get to our grocery store; we have to take a detour every time we go to the grocery store or anything like that," said Janice Tarsi of Effort.

PennDOT says this phase of the project is estimated to take two to three months. Then, crews will switch to the southbound lane.

Crews are widening shoulders, adding left turn lanes, and improving sight distance.

Big Brown Fish and Pay Lakes has a front-row seat to the construction.

Manager Amanda Baird says it's too early to tell how construction will impact the rest of their season. She says hatchery staff have to work around the detour.

"It's a little bit of a longer drive that way, so it's going to cause some timing delays. Now we are going to have to plan to do a stocking earlier or leave earlier just to accommodate the detours," said Baird.

Route 115 has seen several construction projects over the last few years, including the Brodheadsville roundabout project.

Now, people who travel Route 115 often tell Newswatch 16 that it seems project after project keeps popping up.

"I was hoping that the circle would be finished because that seems to be taking such a long time before they start anything else," said Tarsi.

"From the circle up, it's just poorly managed, including the project down here that was the bridge that tied it up at the same time they were working on the roundabouts," said Rothwell.

The entire Merwinsburg Realignment Project is expected to wrap up next August.
