Resorts prepare for busy holiday week

Newswatch 16's Emily Kress stopped by some of the resorts in Monroe County where visitors are already checking in.

MONROE COUNTY, Pa. — Millions are expected to travel this week for the Fourth of July holiday, and many are planning a getaway to the Poconos.

The week of the Fourth of July is starting with a splash at Great Wolf Lodge near Tannersville. Families were already lined up at the check-in desk, eager to get to the waterpark.

"We've been here a couple of times, and it's definitely worth coming back to every time. It's a great place, good for the family, and not too bad on the wallet," said Michael Mering.

The Mering family came from New Jersey to celebrate their daughter's fourth birthday.

"We were expecting a lot of people, but it was kind of surprising that it wasn't as crowded yet," said Mering.

But workers say that will change as the week goes on.

Assistant General Manager Mark Nelsen says the rooms at the lodge and new villas are sold out for the week. Day passes to the waterpark are expected to sell out, too.

"We are packed to the hill, which is a great problem for us to have. We love to have all of the families enjoying the Fourth of July here, especially the few days leading up to it," said Nelsen.

From the waterpark to the waterfront, staff at Shawnee Inn say some people coming to the Poconos for the holiday are looking for a more relaxed visit.

"It's interesting that the Fourth of July falls on a Thursday this year. It gives you a reason to take Friday off and have that extended weekend, said Marketing Director Jeromy Wo.

Wo says the resort is nearly booked for the holiday, with many guests checking in a little later in the week.

"With Shawnee Mountain's fireworks happening this Friday, we have a lot of guests checking in Wednesday and Thursday and staying Friday to Saturday to see the fireworks," said Wo.
