EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. — It's the end of an era in the Land of Love at Pocono Palace in Middle Smithfield Township. The resort near East Stroudsburg, known for its heart-shaped pools and champagne glass tubs, is being sold.
"It hurts. We lost Pocmont, Tamiment, and Fernwood. Those are three big family-oriented resorts that are no longer here, so it has a toll on the local tourist-related business," said Malcolm Law of Middle Smithfield Township.
The owners, Cove Pocono Resorts, announced the sale of the property on Facebook.
"Pocono Palace Resort has been sold to a buyer who approached our ownership company, and the transition of the title is set for May 2."
The post goes on to say That the company will keep its other two locations, Cove Haven and Paradise Stream.
Chris Barrett, the president of the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau, says resorts like Pocono Palace gave the Poconos the nickname Honeymoon Capital of the World.
"It really is part of the legacy of the Pocono Mountains. We're thrilled that there are still two because, believe it or not, right now, there is like a retro vibe that's happening. So, a lot of folks are finding that the things that happened in the '40s, '50s, and '60s are cool, and they're re-experiencing them again," said Barrett.
Employees with Middle Smithfield Township tell us they have not received any plans for the property and don't know who the buyer is.
Those who live in the area tell Newswatch 16 they hope the property remains a resort.
"It would be wonderful if it brings in more tourism, more family-oriented business. That would be great. I don't think we need more housing in the area," said Law.
"It's beautifully set up to be a resort with the amenities and design, so we're hopeful that it continues to be a resort," Barrett said.
The resort company says anyone with reservations at Pocono Palace after May 1 will be able to reschedule at the other two resorts.
There is no word on what will happen to the resort's employees.
