Pies showcase Valentine's Day affection

Newswatch 16's Amanda Eustice takes us to a bakery and pizzeria that are offering slices of love.

MONROE COUNTY, Pa. — Two businesses in the Poconos are using pies to showcase love this Valentine's Day.

Every day, bakers at the Village Farmer and Bakery in Delaware Water Gap pump out sweet treats, and that's no different in the days leading up to Valentine's Day.

"We have a lot of different, awesome baked goods. we have all kinds of fancy Valentine's doughnuts and cupcakes and all kinds of goodies for Valentine's Day for your sweetheart," said Holly Hamm, the bakery manager.

Their best sellers are heart-shaped pies. Assistant manager and baker Nate Walker says a lot of love goes into making them.

"You've got to make the dough. You've got to make sure it fills the little heart. We have different heart tins, and then when we fill out the apples or whatever fruit you want, then we take the top and put it right on it, take the same pie dough, cut little nice hearts out on top of it, sprinkle some pink sugar and put it in the oven."

If you're looking for something a little more savory for your Valentine, Kasa's Pizza near Mount Pocono is serving its version of heart-shaped pie—pizza, that is. Owner Dave Buchter says the pizzas are a big hit with families.

"It's a weekday, so mostly for us, it's a family thing because people can get the pizza and strawberries, chocolate-covered strawberries, and take them home and be with the kids, and instead of going out and spending a lot of money for a sit-down dinner."

The heart-shaped pizza and chocolate-covered strawberry bundle will run you $30.

With the Super Bowl just days before the holiday, it will be a tight turnaround, but Buchter says he and his staff are ready.

This year, he hopes to cash in because the Valentine's Day holiday also falls on Ash Wednesday, another busy day for his shop.

"We look forward to it because January, February, and March are the three slowest months all year round. Especially this year with the weather, having no snow drawing tourists up here and everything else for skiing, it's a little bit down, so having Valentine's Day and Super Bowl Sunday just in a couple of days is a really big push for us," Buchter said.
