Parts of Monroe County Courthouse soon to be auctioned off

Mark your calendars; a piece of the Monroe County Courthouse could soon be yours as the county gears up for an auction next month.

MONROE COUNTY, Pa. — A warehouse on Lackawanna Avenue in East Stroudsburg is filled with furniture and other finds, such as large windows that were once fixtures in the Monroe County Courthouse.

"If you had any history or experiences in the courthouse or worked in it years ago, there might be a piece of furniture you are familiar with," said David Parker, Monroe County Commissioner.

From chairs, desks, and rows of filing cabinets, the county is ready to part with all of these items that were once used in the courthouse to make way for the new. And they want to give people the chance to bid on pieces of history.

"We are having an auction on October 11th. It's going to start at 10 am, but you can come in at 8:30 and peruse the items first, and the auction will start at 10. Hopefully, we'll sell everything," said Parker.

Some of the pieces in storage will be returned to the historic part of the Monroe County Courthouse once the renovation project is complete, but everything else must go.

"So we want to get as much as we can for it, and then whatever the public doesn't want, we'll dispose of because we are paying to rent a building to store the stuff, and we don't want to keep renting a building for things we don't need anymore," added Parker.

All items will be sold 'as is, 'and bidders are asked to be ready to pay in cash and take the items home the same day.
