Opening day for ski resorts in the Poconos

It may not have felt like winter out there today, but conditions were great for ski resorts.

MONROE COUNTY, Pa. — Winter in the Poconos means the ski resorts are busy.

Shawnee Mountain Ski Area near East Stroudsburg is just one of the places welcoming back snow lovers.

"I think we are really seeing the excitement of people wanting to get on the snow this season, so it's great seeing the skiers and snowboarders. We also saw a great turnout with tubing, so I think it's going to be a great season," said Rachel Wyckoff, marketing director at Shawnee.

One of those excited skiers is four-year-old Delphine Nelessen from New Jersey. She says she's ready for the adventure.

"The bunny slope!  Because I love the little chair lifts," said Nelessen.

Newswatch 16 also stopped by Camelback Resort near Tannersville, where plenty of people came out for the opening day.

The resort is also celebrating its 60th ski season.

"For the rest of the season we have fun events planned just about every weekend, live music a DJ all kinds of fun stuff so we are calling this a season long kind of party for 60 years," said Molly Coneybeer, director of marketing at Camelback Resort.

"Everybody was just so excited to get on the chair to get to the top of the mountain and start having a good time," said Ken Powell of Reeders.

Skiiers and snowboarders tell us on this beautiful 50 degree day, they're just happy to be out on the slopes.

"You cant beat it, it is a beautiful snowbird sunny day the snow is great, the people are great, the snow operators work very hard to open the mountain up for us and we are very appreciative, we love it," said Powell.

I skipped school to go here. It's so exciting, so much powder. I fell a couple of times, but it's alright. It didn't hurt," said Kacper Kaczmarek of Albrightsville.

Both Shawnee and Camelback each have seven trails open right now.
