Just how old is the oldest furnace in the Poconos?

Newswatch 16's Valeria Quiñones was there when Beatrice Cahill received her new furnace.

MONROE COUNTY, Pa. — R.J. Groner Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing is in the Poconos and wanted to celebrate 95 years in business. CEO Michael Katz says they decided to serve the community that has served them for so many years by giving away a free furnace and installation.

When Beatrice Cahill saw the ad on TV, she said she immediately called the number on the screen to enter the giveaway.

"Naturally, I was going to get it, but it's a blessing that I got it for free because it's hard on me," Beatrice Cahill says.

Michael Katz says the furnace could not have gone to someone more deserving.

"Fortunately, it was this wonderful woman, Beatrice Cahill. We got out here, her furnace is well over 35 years old, that we can tell."

The furnace had been dead for over a month because it was putting out carbon monoxide, leaving Beatrice without heat. During that time, Beatrice had been sleeping on the couch, where she could warm up with a space heater in her living room.

"I can't believe it happened because I've been having a lot of bad luck, so I could not believe it," said Cahill.

The giveaway only required having the oldest furnace, and the company was hoping Beatrice would have one.

"Just very lucky that it was somebody who was really in need that got the furnace," Katz said.

Now, her new furnace has been installed completely free of charge. Beatrice can breathe easier knowing she doesn't have to worry about that added cost and can finally sleep in a warm bed.

"I'd love to move back to my king-size bed!" she exclaimed.
