EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. — A dedication ceremony was held Monday to unveil a new historical marker in honoring the lives of those lost in an explosion.
The Marshalls Creek explosion of 1964 claimed the lives of three volunteer firefighters and three bystanders, 13 more were injured.
The new historical marker can be found at Regina Farms along Milford Road in East Stroudsburg.
"The placarding system was started so that now when first responders arrive on the scene involving vehicles carrying what we now consider hazardous materials, we are aware of what it's in that trailer, what's in that truck so that a similar incident does not occur," said Assistant Chief Gene Berry, Marshalls Creek Fire Company.
The explosion in Monroe County was the catalyst for the 1974 Transportation Safety Act.
